Every child of God faces affliction in life, but can we all say with David: “It is good for me that I was afflicted”? One of the most spiritually dangerous things that we can do is place God on the outside of our afflictions and see Him in either an uncaring or non-causing position in relation to our struggles. No, not every struggle is what you could call ‘affliction’ in this sense; some struggles are the direct consequences resulting from a specific sin. But when we see long-term, ongoing afflictions such as chronic illness, difficult marriages, or even financial struggles, they aren’t always linked directly to specific sins. They may in fact be God’s way of getting our attention and teaching us more about Himself so that we might glorify Him even more.
